A Brief History Of The Church Of St. Bartolomew
-
The church of St. Bartolomew, once a part of the Jesuitical Konvikt campus, was built in 1731 by the renamed architect K.I. Diezenhofer in place of the so called "New Jerusalem", a chapel established by the preacher - Milic of Kromeriz. The interior fresco decorations were the work of V.V. Reiner. In 1772, after the abollotion of the Jesuit Order, the cherch was un-dedicated and purchased by Baroness Thysenbaert. Later, the church was given to the 3rd Order of the Grey Sisters of St. Francis to become a part of the newly founded convent
-
The memory of the convent founders - Anna Rosaria and Marie Frantiska Plananska and Frantiska Grossmanova - has been ever since cherished by the Grey Sisters. The congregation of the Grey Sisters occupied the premises of the maternal convent up to 1949, when unlawfully forced out by the Communist Regime. The convent with the church of St. Bartolomew was utilized by the Internal Affairs Department for the purposes of interrogation, torture and imprisoment facilities, as well as offices of the Secret Police. The House of Prayers turned into the House of Horror.
As a result of the events launched by November 17, 1989 that impeached the Communist Rule, after a 40 years gap, the estate of the Grey Sisters was returned to the Order in accordance with the issued Bill No. 298/1990.
At first, only convent buildings, except for the church of St. Bartolomew, were returned in an utterly disasterous condition. In the course of 1991-1994 general reconstruction works were launched with the support of the Unitas company. The Convent together with the chapel was re-dedicated and the Grey Sisters returned to Prague. The church of St. Bartolomew, used as a warehouse by the Communist, has been returned to the congregation of the Grey Sisters recently, in 1995, again in a ruinous condition.
A step by step restoration plan has been launched. Fisrt the roofing and the facade have been repaird. As the small tower was destroyed completely, a new one has been built in its place, where we are placing this commemorative document.
